Dr. Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN: Reverse Climate Change

Dr. Michael Milnes is an award-winning physical therapist presently living and working in Rochester, MN. He’s also an Ironman triathlete and an award-winning volunteer. In 2017, he began fundraising to fight climate change.

“I really try to be an ever-evolving philanthropist,” said Dr. Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN. “That’s why I started fundraising to plant trees, save animals and otherwise stop climate change. It’s a topic that people ignore because, subconsciously, it’s so weighty, but that’s exactly why I can’t look the other way. I’ve already raised thousands of dollars to save Earth.”

Aside from raising money, one of the best things you can do to help reverse climate change is to enter a career associated with protecting the planet. Raising awareness with as many people as you can also makes an excellent impact, as does volunteering with green organizations to plant trees, pick up litter and otherwise do your part in saving Earth.

If you hope to follow Dr. Michael Milnes’s lead and fundraise in your community as he did in Rochester, MN, contact local organizations and ask how you can help. This’ll provide insight into how fundraising works so you can make your own efforts even more effective.

Dr. Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN: Beginner Triathlete Tips

Dr. Michael Milnes has lived and worked in Rochester, MN, for nearly two decades. He is a former college football player who became a physical therapist after a career-ending injury. He has since dedicated his life to working with athletes and to competing in triathlons.

Every day, Dr. Michael Milnes runs or cycles around his Rochester, MN, community or he swims at a local rec center to train.

“I didn’t do one of those crazy ‘run a triathlon in twelve weeks!!’ things,” wrote Dr. Milnes. “I either ran, cycled and swam every day for a year. Then I set a date with my Ironman race and started the more intensive training.”

If you hope to run a triathlon, but would like to lessen the possibility of injury or burnout, consider following Dr. Milnes’s path by training slowly. These tips will help:

  • Learn Each Sport

Before you can complete a race that requires running, cycling and swimming, you need to learn each sport. Spend one month learning to do each of the three.

  • Design a Regular Training Routine

Once you’ve practiced each of the three sports needed for a triathlon, develop a regular routine doing each one twice per week with one active rest day. If you’re following Dr. Michael Milnes’s schedule, he kept doing this for a year in his Rochester, MN, community before upgrading to his Ironman training.

Dr. Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN: Yoga for Injuries

Dr. Michael Milnes has worked as a physical therapist in Rochester, MN, for nearly two decades. He is passionate about helping athletes heal from injuries and has personal experience recovering from a football injury.

Yoga is one of the many things that Dr. Michael Milnes recommends to his Rochester, MN, patients.

“I tell them to do yoga every day,” said Dr. Milnes, “not just for healing, but for injury prevention. The science is there and the common sense is there, yoga prevents injuries. It has helped me tremendously.”

If you’re prone to injuries from sports or daily activities, consider adding yoga to your morning or evening routines. The easiest way to begin practice is to purchase a yoga mat and yoga pants for a home practice. Search for beginner yoga videos on YouTube or sign up with a yoga-oriented channel to get routines to do every day. This is cheaper and more practical for daily practice, especially because you can stop when you need to and modify as necessary for your physical condition.

Don’t forget to check with your physician or physical therapist before you begin yoga. Dr. Michael Milnes often guides his Rochester, MN, patients through one or two yoga practices to deliver personal injury-prevention tips before letting them switch to home practice.

Michael Milnes Rochester MN: Football Injuries

Michael Milnes is a Rochester, MN physical therapist who has been in practice for twenty years. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he treats a wide range of injuries, helping his clients to regain most or all of their full range of motion.

He treats a lot of sports injuries, including injuries from skiing accidents and bicycle crashes. But he treats more football injuries than from any other sport. “It’s such a rugged game,” he says.

A former college football player himself, whose career was cut short by a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), it disturbed him to read, in the summer of 2017, about the high occurrence of CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy in former NFL players. “It’s a degenerative brain disease most often found in people who have had repeated head trauma,” he says. “They studied the brains of a hundred former football players, and they found CTE in ninety-nine of them. Absolutely stunning.” Unfortunately, he added, CTE is not the type of football injury to respond to physical therapy.

Michael Milnes works out of an office located in a restored Victorian home in the historic district of Rochester MN.

Michael Milnes Rochester MN: Living History

Michael Milnes is a physical therapist whose practice is in Rochester, MN. He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul.

He is a lifelong Minnesotan, born and raised in the town of Red Wing, a small town situated on the Mississippi River. He has been in Rochester since completing his education and getting his license. His practice is located in an old Victorian house in the city’s historic district; he and his wife make their home in a second Victorian about six blocks away.

“Both houses are quite spectacular,” Michael Milnes says. His wife is a member of the local Historic Preservation Society, which works to save viable old houses from the wrecking ball. “We think of them as monuments,” Michael says. “They need to be re-purposed somehow.”

That determination to save older homes is what led him to set up his practice in its current location, and to the decision to buy the second Victorian nearby. “I feel a huge obligation to protect these old houses,” Michael Milnes says of his and similar homes in Rochester MN. “They are like living history.”

Michael Milnes Rochester MN: Guys Crushing Each Other

Michael Milnes has lived in Rochester, MN, since shortly after he received his graduate degree in physical therapy and got his state license to practice.

He set up his practice in an old Victorian house in the city’s historic district. He and his wife used to lived on the house’s upper floor, but after several years they were able to buy a second Victorian six blocks away, where they now live. Now, Michael Milnes uses the second floor of the first house for an office, and for storage space.

As a physical therapist he treats a wide range of complains, including back and neck pain, arm and shoulder pain, and leg and knee pain. He also treats people with issues not ordinarily associated with physical therapy, such as arthritis and degenerative joint disease.

But the bulk of his practice is made up of people who were injured playing sports. He sees a lot of high school football players. “Studies show that football has the highest risk of injury, when you compare it to other sports,” he says. “The reason is obvious enough: it’s such a high-impact game, with guys crushing each other on virtually every snap.”

Michael Milnes has practiced in Rochester, MN for nearly twenty years.

Michael Milnes is a physical therapist who practices in Rochester, MN. He studied at the University of Minnesota, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees.

His practice is located in an old house in Rochester’s historic district, just a short walk from a bustling commercial area.
