When you break a bone, part of the healing process is immobility, which can last a few months. Physical therapy is often required after the bone is healed in order to build strength.
The first thing you want to do in order to build strength after a broke bone is get it used to regular movements. This can be as simple as making a fist, wiggling your fingers, or even just turning your arm or leg over. All of these movements can be difficult or painful after so much time being immobile; the more you move it, the faster recovery will be.
Michael Milnes also explains that once you can move the affected area more freely, you can start doing some basic weight training. Start off extremely gradually, and build up weight over time.
