As Minnesota’s third-largest city, the population of Rochester reaches over 100,000 people. Rochester also has a long and rich history, being founded in 1855 and named after Rochester, New York. The railroad, which was laid near the town in the 1860s brought new residents and opportunities for the growing area.
The town suffered a major setback during the Great Tornado of 1883 that left 200 injured and 37 dead. Dr. William Mayo and his sons were instrumental in caring for the injured as there was no medical facility in town at the time. Through donations and the help of the Sisters of St. Francis, St. Mary’s Hospital was opened in 1889. The Mayo family practice grew and has become one of the most well-respected medical facilities in the world. The Mayo Clinic represented a large part of the economy in Rochester with over 30,000 employees and 2 million visitors per year.
Michael Milnes loves his community and the rich history behind it. He is honored to be part of such a diverse city.
