Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN is a physical therapist who has been in practice since 1996. That’s the year he received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, and became licensed to practice.
He holds undergraduate degrees in Biology and Physical Education, and for a long time thought that he might like to be a Phys Ed teacher at the high school level. But after being injured playing football he became interested in his own recovery process and the physical therapy that was involved, and decided that it might be something he would rather do. “To tell you the truth, my physical therapist was really cute, and I had a crush on her,” he admits today. “That had a little something to do with it. But it was the right choice, because I’ve really found my calling.”
Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN says that being a physical therapist requires a lot of critical thinking, which he likes a lot. “I like using my brain.” Sometimes, he says, patients don’t have a clear idea of what is going on with their bodies, even if they have a specific injury or got it a specific way, like falling from a ladder. He says that a big part of his job is figuring out the best way to treat the injury so that he patient recovers as much mobility as possible. “I shoot for a hundred percent, of course,” he says.
Michael Milnes of Rochester, MN says that his background as an athlete helps in many instances. He relates better to runners, for example, than he does to post-operative patients. But he says it’s a subtle distinction that in no way affects the treatment plans he prescribes.
